Our 5 to watch this weekend takes an early battering
Sentiment hardly ever pays dividends in sport. Occasionally there will be the perfect synergy of a story and event that somehow cannot fail – Aldaniti and jockey Bob Champion at the 1981 Grand National – but most often than not we come a cropper.
So it was with the early stages of out 5 to Watch this weekend.
Sentiment made me back Air Chris Hoy in the sprint at the World Cycling Championships in Denmark. Just shows you what I know. He lost in the quarter-finals.
Then I let my heart rule my head when I thought West Ham would beat Stoke. It was 1-0 but Stoke came out on top to plunge Gianfranco Zola’s team deeper into relegation trouble, especially since Hull beat Fulham.
Finally, Leeds couldn’t continue their Guinness Premiership run and fell 19-0 against Gloucester.
But are we down?
Lewis Hamilton may step forward to win the Australian Grand Prix but he faces a fight against the Red Bulls of Sebastian Vetter and Mark Webber.
Incidentally, the funniest story of the weekend has to be Michael Schumacher complaining of Fernando Alonso and Hamilton blocking him on the track during his qualifying laps. Pot, kettle, black?
We still have the mighty Huddersfield Giants on Sunday to look forward to against St Helens.

Formula One's a bit more interesting
Formula One’s a bit more interesting
Anyone reading the papers in the last few weeks cannot fail to notice that the Formula One circus is happening again. Bahrain hosts the opening race on Sunday and normally I wouldn’t give a hoot but there is something different this year: two Brits are in the frame for the world title.
The fact that Michael Schumacher is back has tended to be an also ran in the great scheme of things for F1 fans and pundits. No, the real contest is between Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button.
Or is it?
Schumacher is the guy we love to hate. Mainly because he has umpteen world titles, was winning everything for years before retiring and he had the nerve to shunt poor Damon Hill off the track to stop him winning the drivers’ champion ship way back when.
So much is down to the car that the fact that Schuey is back driving may not count for much. Without a super car a super driver looks ordinary. Somehow I can’t see Schumacher coming back just to be an also ran.
And what of Hamilton and Button?
Button is the world champion, Hamilton was the year before but I reckon it’s Hamilton who will get the best treatment from McLaren because he’s their boy – and has been since he wore short trousers.
I’ll watch the opening lap and if nothing happens I’ll switch off until the highlights. Apart from anything else the races themselves are so boring.
There’s a bit more interest this season. But not a lot.
Finally, hearty congratulations to Daisy Goldsmith, a 14-year-old from Somerset.
Not heard of her? You will.
She is Britain’s youngest qualified referee after passing all the exams the FA could throw at her. Great stuff.
Just as long as she doesn’t want to commentate on TV that’s fine. Ladies are no good at commentating, as the Beeb have discovered with Jacqui Oatley .
