Weekend of success

Spain did the business for us at the weekend along with the rest of 5 our to Watch which was in danger of producing a whole set of winners!

I thought it would be close in the World Cup final and it was but Spain deserved to win against a Dutch side that kicked their way to inglorious defeat.

It was a shame - and a pity for Howard Webb who had a good game in difficult circumstances. I don't go along with mouthy commentators who said he should have sent off a couple of Dutch players - or even one.

That would not have helped the game at all and it would have given the Dutch even more ammunition to complain - which they have done in buckets.

True, I'd hoped Spain would have converted their glaring chances and won it in normal time but the right team and the best team won.

Germany were just too good for Uruguay to capture third place and we saw a fitting match to concluse the "also-ran" element of the South African extravaganza.

Away from football and Mark Webber gave his Red Bull Formula One management a true Ozzie blast and a reminder that he is every bit as good as teammate - and supposed number one driver - Sebastian Vettel.

Webber won the British GP in style from a resurgent Lewis Hamilton and showed he's nobody's mug.

The All Blacks kicked off their Tri-Nations rugby series with a 32-13 thumping of South Africa. It was a wider margin than I thought would be the case but the Springboks were no match for the New Zealanders on their home soil.

Finally, Darren Clarke is back in the Open this week after second place in the Scottish Open and nice to see the big man back. We tipped him to win but I'll settle for second and a good showing at St Andrew's this week.

We're not smug - just a good weekend of sport!
