Snooker’s Mr Reliable returns

Let’s hear it for Steve Davis, six times world snooker champion, who has qualified for the first round proper of this year’s event at The Crucible.


Not bad for an old codger of 52.


Davis is part of that small breed of sports people who don’t know when they are beaten. People whose steely determination and laid back attitude belie an enthusiasm for competition younger contemporaries find hard to match.

It’s ironic that his former mentor and manager Barry Hearn is now in charge of the game, shaping its future and trying to bring back some of the novelty and enthusiasm or years ago. He could do worse than enlist Davis to help him.


He just doesn’t like giving up.


It matters not to the rest of us that he may well go out in round one but you can bet your life that Davis will be just as hurt if he doesn’t get through.


Or, rather, he’ll probably be more disappointed that he hasn’t played as well as he knows he can.
